Is MSN Messenger still working in 2026?
Short answer: no. MSN Messenger — later renamed Windows Live Messenger — was retired by Microsoft on 15 April 2013 for most of the world, and the last remaining service in mainland China closed on 31 October 2014. The old client still installs, but it can never sign in: the servers it talks to were switched off.
Why the old client can't connect
MSN Messenger was never a peer-to-peer app. Every sign-in, contact list, status change and nudge travelled through Microsoft's Messenger servers. When those were decommissioned, the protocol had nothing left to answer it — which is why a fresh install of Messenger 7.5 or Windows Live Messenger 2009 hangs on "Signing in…" and then fails with a connection error, no matter what you do to your firewall or settings.
Installers found on abandonware and archive sites don't change that, and unofficial re-uploads are a well-known way to pick up malware. There is no configuration, patch or compatibility mode that brings the original service back.
